Abundance

We were so wealthy then, although we did not know it:

Moist pink-fleshed trout on our plates, a giant freezer full

Of halibut and moose, the green rivers rich with salmons’

Sleek bodies—silver shingles shaking down to soft

White bellies; how many we pulled out and ate,

Little thinking our abundance

might end.
