the loneliness

is a hand pressing me down

cheek rubbed raw

stinging skin

I am full and empty

inside me a universe—cold,

dark—replete with the light of stars

that never touch each other

crowded by debris

a void

In this darkness I can’t talk

only whimper like a child

hold a hand on my breast

feel the hoof-beat of my heart

I am a stone rolled over by waves

a leaf covered softly by others

thousands on thousands

flattened

into dust
